Why Does My Wart Keep Coming Back?

Warts are harmless growths on the skin which can appear almost anywhere on the body. They are caused by a common virus known as Human Papilloma Virus, or HPV. The virus infects a small area of your skin, the infection grows rapidly and results in a small bump on the surface of the skin.

Most warts are painless, except in areas where pressure is frequently put on them, such as the soles of the feet.

Although people of any age can be infected, most of the times children and young adults are affected. They are spread by contact; you can infect yourself by touching a wart and then touching another part of your body, and the virus is easily transfered from one person to another by the sharing of razors, towels, or other personal items.

50% of all people who get in contact with the HPV virus develop warts, the other 50% never develop warts. Some common types of warts:

– Common warts appear as brownish or grayish bumps on the skin.
– Plantar warts grow on the soles of the feet. They appear as thickened skin with small, dark spots.
– Flat warts grow on the face, arms, and legs. They are small and flat, and may be yellowish or pink in color.

How To Get Rid Of Warts

In most cases, warts will clear up on their own over several months or longer. However, if you are unhappy with the way they look, or if you have warts that are spreading or painful, there are several options for wart removal.

* Over-the-Counter Remedies
The most common remedy for removing warts is salicylic acid, which is applied topically and softens the skin,

* Prescription Medications
– Retinoid cream, sold as Retin-A and Avita, disrupts the growth of wart skin cells.

– Electrosurgery and curettage are two procedures that are often used in tandem. The wart is first burned by
an electrical current (electrosurgery), then cut away with a knife or other instrument (curettage).

– Cryotherapy; the wart will be freezed with a very cold liquid.

* Tape Occlusion
This fairly effective home remedy for wart removal involves placing duct tape over the wart for one week, then soaking the area in water and scrubbing with a pumice stone until the wart falls away.
